“Sleeping long enough is not like getting a good night’s sleep,” says Henning Tiemeier, head of research at Erasmus MC, on its own site. “True sleep keeps the brain healthy and helps the body recover.” So, good sleep leads to better memory and more concentration, and in the long run you have a lower risk of brain diseases (depression, stroke and dementia).
Researchers have examined the sleep of over 1.1 million people in different countries, including 200,358 Dutch. They argue that more attention should be paid to improving the quality of sleep. It’s not enough to extend your sleep time, but there’s still a lot of focus.
Rhythm and relaxation
Researcher Annemarie Luik of Erasmus MC said people are already quiet and dark bedrooms, only relaxing activities and intensive sports just before bedtime, they can wake up at the same time without drinking coffee and alcohol.
However, about 10% suffer from chronic insomnia and do not go out. Eus van Someren, a fellow researcher at the Dutch Neuroscience Institute, says more research is needed on this. “This is the single most important risk factor, especially for the extra pain from developing anxiety disorders, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder.” Volunteers can help with their research by registering through the register (Slaapregister.nl).
