Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Tuesday that the eruption of the driveway on Pugu Island is currently about 70 percent complete.

The beach ramp will pave the way for the construction of runways and other structures on the island, the largest outpost in the Philippines in the South China Sea, he said.

"In the future we will build some buildings for Filipinos who want to go to structures and tourists for the military," Lorenzana told reporters briefing.

The Philippines has established a lonely municipality on Pag-asa Island called Kalayaan, part of Palawan.

Fishermen, army, and police forces now live in this area.

National Security Advisor Hermogenes Esperon said construction of the Kalayaan Shelter Port on Pag-asa Island is already underway.

According to him, the structure will protect larger fishing vessels and even Philippine naval vessels.
